Health Care Professionals: 4 Lessons Your Patients Teach You

Last Updated Feb 2013

By: Sue Heacock

life lessonsPatients are the most wonderful people we, as health care professionals, bump into. Even if they are struggling to recover from disabilities, injuries and various illnesses, they inspire us with their life stories and allow us to have a different view in life.

Patients can teach us so much. The following life lessons are just some of them:

  1. Live a passionate life. You were born to live only one life. "Every man dies. Not every man really lives," a famous quote by William Wallace teaches us to look at the width and not the length of our life. We don't carry a warranty for a long and healthy life. In our therapy practice, we come across young kids and seniors who are fighting to live a normal life. They come in with a smile despite what they are going through. They teach us to live each day like it's our last one. Appreciate and value your strenghts and what you have.

  2. Laugh at yourself and your life events. As they say, "Don't take life too seriously, nobody gets out alive anyway." Health care teaches professionals to look at the funny side in every situation. Forget about your mistakes. Yes, learn from them but don't let it lead to regrets. A patient needs extra care when going through the darkest days of mental illness. Keep in mind Mignon McLaughlin's words -- "A sense of humor is a major defense against minor troubles."

  3. patient careFamily is important. Just like I said earlier, we aren't guaranteed with a long life. Learn to forgive and forget about past issues. Realize the value of each family member and your relationship with them. The families of our patients support them no matter what and they never leave their side. Their strong concern towards you will make you stronger.

  4. Be strong. Seeing your patients eager to recover from a stroke, you will learn what being strong-willed actually means. Having a lower physical capability doesn't hinder us from gaining strength. True strength comes within us.

Our patients can contribute a lot in your life. Take advantage in being a health care professional and change your life into a positive one. Through out your career, what have you learned from your patients? Share your stories with us!
