Just like jobs in law enforcement, therapy professionals often have to face people who are difficult to deal. Let's face it, you don't always see your patients cheery and optimistic, but do not allow their negativity affect upon you and your intentions.
By understanding your patients, you will make a huge difference in patient care. These are some changes that they want you to make:
- Don't control them. Allow them to be a part of important decisions. They don't want to feel helpless by not knowing their options. Communicating with them and letting them be involved is what they want from you.
- Help them feel human. Your patients are going through pain and discomfort. Being poked, tested, prodded and scanned don't make them feel special. In fact, they feel like just another of your "case". The least you, therapy professionals, can do is call them by their name, hold their hand and look into their eyes while talking to them.
- Show some respect. Everyone's nature and culture is different. Not everyone may want you to call them by their first name. Be sure to ask them first. Your patient's family is also under going the same stress as them. Remember to honour them as well and show that you care as much as they do.
- Relieve their fear. Because of their disabilities or disorders, your patients are scared. It makes them feel that their life is on hold and they let it out by getting angry at you. Do not take it personally. Stay composed and answer their questions.
You definitely try your level best to give excellent therapy services to your patients but sometimes, they make it difficult for you and tend to test your patience. Hang in there, therapy professionals. After you see the results, you and your patients will be so glad! Keep in mind that the small things you do make a big difference in other people's lives.
