Top 5 Apps for Medical Professionals

Last Updated Oct 2012

By: Marcela De Vivo

medical appsYour iPad, iPhone, smartphone and tablet are loaded with over 200,000 applications that offers something for just about everything which is making it difficult to choose. With that in mind, here is just a quick look at some of the best medical apps out there for the medical, healthcare and therapy professionals.

Medscape

MedscapeIt’s safe to say that this app has been eagerly awaited by thousands and thousands of medical professionals. It is completely boggling to see the amount of free content that is built into this application. There are over 5,000 references to drugs, over 3,000 diseases, over 2,000 images as well as many videos to go with them. If you're looking for an application that is best described as an "all-in-one" application – then Medscape may be your best option.

Epocrates

Link to iTunes

EpocratesThere are many people that swear by this application and find it to be an essential reference for the many different drugs that are out there right now. As a healthcare professional, it's very difficult to keep it working memory of all of the different drugs and drug interactions that can go on when you're diagnosing and treating patients.

The premium version of this application is even more intensive and provides a massive amount of information for drug interactions. It's definitely worth the buy even if you only save one patient from a nasty drug interaction!

Skyscape

Link to iTunes

SkyscapeThis is the premium application for android that is extremely high-quality and has been made exclusively for the android platform. It can feel a little bit alienating to be on android, especially when so many people are using the iPhone and IOS platform. Nevertheless, Skyscape is an amazing all-in-one medical app for both medical professionals and medical students. It helps medical professionals access resources at the point of care.

Evernote

Link to iTunes

EvernoteWhile this application is not dedicated to the medical field, it is nevertheless one of the most useful apps that you will ever find for a mobile device. Evernote is hands-down the best notetaking application that money can buy – and it's not even that expensive! If you're not using this for both your medical profession and your personal life, you're making a serious mistake.

Calculate

Link to iTunes

As a medical professional, it is very difficult to come up with medical calculations on-the-fly. This application makes it extremely easy to do so. Along with that, the interface is one of the Calculatemost beautiful that we have ever seen. The aesthetics go a long way towards making it very easy and clear for you to come up with calculations on-the-fly. When a single mistake could mean the difference between life and death, you better believe it's important to have your calculations correct. Instead of trusting long division or pen and paper, use this application.

The only thing that I could say would be missing from this list of medical apps would be an application that help medical professionals schedule the dates. As we know, it's very difficult to live a "normal life" as a therapist, doctor or nurse, so something that helps those in the profession keep some semblance of normality in their lives would be a welcome addition to this list.
